Lost Horizon [Game Download] Review

Lost Horizon is loosely based on the novel of the same name by James Hilton, and infact has more in common with, and also appears inspired by, a typical Indiana Jones adventure. I just finished the game and I have a lot of positive things to say about it. The game nicely represents the classic point-&-click adventure genre. All the ingredients that the genre fans would look for are present: a solid story, good puzzles, good dialogues and voice-acting, great graphics and cinematics and some atmospheric background music. The rich, colorful backdrops for the various locations are particularly well-drawn and provide a great feeling of immersion. The cinematics are also of high quality compared with the usual standard for adventure games. Character animation can be a little off in places though.

Puzzles are mostly inventory based, often consisting of applying MacGyver-style logic to find solutions. The game consists of seven chapters of decent length that would require several hours to finish. However, despite the length, it may not take players longer than a few days of dedicated play to finish; the reason being that the puzzles are not all that difficult. Especially for experienced players, Lost Horizon may not provide enough of a challenge. A big reason is the fact that only a handful of scenes with few inventory items open up at a time, coupled with the fact that all hot-spot locations can be identified with the click of a button. On the plus side, players may hardly find themselves stuck on a puzzle for too long for frustration to develop. Another gripe I have is that there is very little character development. This is at least in part due to attempting to follow in the veins of Indiana Jones too closely, thus suffering from lack of originality and stereotypical characters.

Lost Horizon, nonetheless, is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure game that could have been greater than it is. I would recommend it to the adventure games fans and in particular to players who are looking for an introduction to the forgotten-but-far-from-dead point-&-click genre.
